Dangerous Co-Sleeping?

I asked my husband if he had seen the controversial co-sleeping advertisement.

Me: "You know the one with the baby and the knife? They are trying to say that co-sleeping.."

Husband: "....turns babies into murderers?"

Um not exactly. I tried to explain to him the point of the ad campaign is to tell people that co-sleeping is dangerous because people could roll over, etc.

Husband: "whatever, I've been rolling over on Leo forever."

And then he went back to looking at his fantasy football stats. I kinda wish that I could just brush off parenting controversies like him. He just never gets wrapped up in what other people are doing, are saying, the latest study, "the mommy wars." He just parents the way he parents, lives his life the way he lives his life and that's it. What other people are doing is of no concern to him.

When I saw the co-sleeping ad, I furiously googled safe ways to co-sleep, benefits of co-sleeping, read everyone's blog post about the ad, about co-sleeping. All this despite the fact that we've been co-sleeping for about a year with absolutely no problems. So obviously what we are doing is working for us and that should be enough for me.

  1. If you're worried, you could always get the Arm's Reach Co-sleeper. It pulls right up to your bed and is a separate little sleeping zone for your baby so there's no way you'll roll onto him. I had one but we never took to co-sleeping, despite my desire to, so it's with a friend of ours who is using it with her 8 week old and loving it!

  2. The Bloggess had a hilarious column about this ad: http://thestir.cafemom.com/baby/128935/lesson_26_babies_are_as.

We've never been co-sleepers (well, there was that once, but that was out of pure desperation to get some sleep when Noah was really little), but I just don't have a problem with it, and I don't think it's nearly as dangerous as these folks make it out to be.

  3. Ha. I laughed out loud at your husband's response considering it's exactly like something my husband would say. We've never had a problem with co-sleeping, either - Mittens keeps Husband on his toes with errant smacks to the face and occasional kicks to the groin.

  4. Oh how I ADORE Matt, he is just so typically male. It is hard for us women to not get wrapped up in the wars of everything, who has the cutest boyfriend, the best bag, the sweetest baby, the best life. I am so sick of all the competition. Why cant we all just get along :)

  5. I'm with Matt on this one! At some point you just have to let it go. There are so many extreme opinions out there, you just have to eventually tune them out. You know first hand that it works for you. That's all you need to know.

  6. The whole world cosleeps. The US doesn't. We did with Ava and it was great. I mean unless you're a heavy sleeper maybe?
